Chapter Six

HEIDI SEARCHED JASON’S face for his reaction.

A muscle twitched in his cheek. “Are you considering it?”

She shrugged helplessly. “I’d be the assistant manager, and the manager is rumored to be retiring soon. I’d have to learn local specifics, but I feel I could take the company to a new level.” She’d done her research and had learned as much about the branch as possible. It would be a challenge, but she’d welcome a challenge in her professional life with confidence and hard work. It was her personal life where her self-esteem had taken a beating.

“Sounds like a great opportunity.” His jaw clenched a little too tight for her liking. “Besides, you always wanted to learn more about the country where your grandparents came from.”

“You remember that?” Heidi swallowed a bittersweet taste in her mouth.

“I remember your every smile, your every word, your every... kiss. Never mind.” He looked away.

Her cheeks flamed. She needed to find a safer topic than their kisses. “Besides, my brother is already stationed there and my parents want to move to Germany. Of course, I’d miss my sisters and...” She stopped herself before saying you. It had been painful enough to try to forget Jason the first time.

Heidi kept quiet, in her mind pleading with him to say something. That he’d miss her. That he couldn’t live without her. That he was falling for her again the way she was falling more and more in love with him every minute.

“Then I’m happy for you,” he said at last, his voice void of any emotion.

“Oh.” Heidi stepped back, deflated. This wasn’t what she’d expected to hear from him at all.

She didn’t have a chance to say anything besides oh. The nurse called Jason’s name.

When Heidi drove back with him about half an hour later, silence stretched thin in the car.

“I should’ve confronted you instead of running away from the issue nine years ago,” she finally said as she turned a corner. “I was stubborn and angry and scared.”

“You shouldn’t have been scared. Well, I should’ve done things differently, too.” Jason’s voice dipped low. “So I’m going to say it now, in case I don’t have a chance to do it later. I still have feelings for you, Heidi.”

Her breath caught in her throat. Her heart was beating wildly against her rib cage. Gripping the steering wheel tighter, she forced herself to concentrate on the road. She had the presence of mind to stop at the red light while a myriad of thoughts whirled in her head.

“I still have feelings for you, too,” she whispered.

As the light changed, she moved forward, wishing she could move forward in her relationship with Jason as easily.

Something inside her had been stopping her from handing her heart over to him again. And that something wasn’t only the possibility of moving to the other side of the world. She turned into the familiar neighborhood, desperate to discard her fears and reach out for the happiness that was right beside her.

She said a prayer, asking for guidance.
